Like Biblical Ruth, Eve went along with her husband, Andrew, when he returned to England after working as a British volunteer in the Philippines. Both found 80s England a different country. Andrew experienced difficulty in finding a job as a clinical psychologist. Due to limited finances, they had to live with Andrew’s parents on arrival. Apart from strains arising from different backgrounds and cultural expectations, there were tensions between generations. For Eve, opportunities to find work in England were non-existent as she found that her degree in history and career in the National Museum of the Philippines counted for nothing. As she re-invented herself, she experienced undercurrents of racism. She succeeded in training to be a nurse. Her personality and Filipino upbringing inevitably impacted on how she coped with marriage, parenthood, work, and friendships.
